Postnatal Care

The prospect of being discharged from hospital and returning home with a brand new baby is extremely daunting. I have been there myself, and even as a midwife, it can still be overwhelming.

The NHS is an excellent service; however, it can’t always meet the needs of new parents. This is where I can help. I carry out all the routine checks a midwife would do when you are seen postnatally, and like the antenatal appointments I offer, these are unhurried, and I can spend quality time with you as new parents, using my expertise. This all takes place in your home at a time to suit you. I can provide postnatal care in the following or neighbouring areas:

As a practicing midwife I have supported countless women with breastfeeding. I regularly attend in-house training to ensure I keep up to date with the latest advice and guidance. Having breastfed my own children for a year, I am well equipped to offer full support and advice during your postnatal visit.

Your home visit will last around 1.5 hours and will include head to toe physical wellbeing checks for mother and baby (including weight check). I’ll also help with:

Feeding support

I’ll give non-judgemental breastfeeding support or advice and assistance with formula bottle feeding.

First aid tips

I’ll advise you of signs to look out for if a baby is unwell and general safety around the house.

Newborn care

I’ll show you to how to top and tail or bath your baby. I’ll also give you tricks and tips for a speedy nappy change!

Safe sleeping

We’ll discuss where and how your baby should sleep, room temperature and what the baby should be dressed in.

Birth debrief

The birth of a baby can be traumatic for some. You may not have experienced the birth that you initially planned and hoped for, and have many unanswered questions. Hospitals by law, must keep birth records for 25 years. You can request a copy of your notes for a fee of around £25. Before we arrange a time to meet to discuss the birth, I’ll collect the notes from you so I can study these thoroughly. Once we meet, I will then have all the information I need to enable me to answer your questions.

As a midwife who works very closely with all aspects of labour and delivery, I can offer unbiased information, and hopefully closure so that you can go on to enjoy your new baby and postnatal period.
